Originally part of the Spanish Colony East Florida, and then reapportioned under American Jurisdiction as part of Mosquito County and Brevard County, Indian River County became its own entity in May of 1925. The largest city in the county is Sebastian, and the county seat is Vero Beach.
The local economy of the county is greatly boosted by the presence of the general aviation manufacturer Piper Aircraft, the CVS distribution Center and the world wide fruit harvester River Citrus.
