In Hawaiian, Waimea means "red water", which is most likely in reference to the red-colored silt that once freely flowed out of the Waimea River mouth.
After a large rain, look for murky and red water on the Waimea Bay Cam, when the river mouth breaks through the sand bank and connects with the bay.
